The story of Gus and Larry as told by their mom
These two boys were both orphans. Gus came to live with us in 1998 by way
of the Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue. He had been abandoned in a NYC
park. After more than a week at the dog pound with no one claiming him, he
was sprung by the rescue group. He was named August by one of the rescue
workers since that is the month he was found. The name stuck and Gus became
his nickname.
Larry showed up on our street in 2002 at about 5 months of age. Our street
is made up of 50 homes and bounded by a large nursery on one side and a golf
course on the other so Larry was too little to have gotten here on his own.
After unsucessfully trying to locate his owners, we speculated that he was
either dumped or he came onto our block via a mobile home which was being
used by neighbors due to a house fire. He received the name Larry after Lawrence
Olivier since he was so handsome. From the day Larry arrived, he took a fancy
to Gus. This bond has become stronger over the years. Whenever my husband
and I return home with Gus, Larry is always at the door to greet us but it
is very obvious it is Gus who he is really happy to see. Larry seeks Gus
out to cuddle with him and Gus is obliging in the cooler weather. |
